A note to the reader: While covering Pei Ho Street, we were surrounded by a group of men who threatened us and demanded for us to delete an interview we had recorded. With this event as an example, we would like to bring to light the looming issue of media censorship. INQ members, cover your stories with caution.
On a typical night, as people pack up to go home from work, roadside vendors at Pei Ho Street begin to haul out used items to be sold onto the road. A crowd gathers around the vendors, curious to see what is for sale. Vendors sell a plethora of products, ranging from electronics to kitchen items. At some corners, vendors even sell used guitars. In poorly lit streets, vendors illuminate their products using mini lamps and flashlights. Vendors with smaller products bring out suitcases full of products such as pocket knives, flashlights and small toys. Such items are placed on a plastic sheet. Potential buyers are allowed to pick up and examine products, and knives can be removed from their sheath to check for scratches and the sharpness of the blade.
